Cµ - the Research Center for Micro- and Nanochemistry and Engineering

The research mission of the institute is to explore how chemical processes work on a microscopic scale, to develop novel methods and systems for micro and nanochemistry, and to apply this knowledge to develop novel intelligent microsystem devices, e.g. for lab-on-chip technology. The goal of the institute is to focus expertise in the fields of micro and nanochemistry and microsystem technology which is dispersed at the University among different research groups in the Science and Engineering departments.
In the institute, groups work together in a stimulating environment, sharing their knowhow, facilities, and creativity. A prominent activity of Cµ is currently to merge microchemistry and microelectronics. In this context, major research efforts are being made to design, construct and investigate components and integrated systems for the lab on microchip technology. The final goal is to install a full-fledged chemical laboratory on a microchip.

Center of Nanostructures and Nanomaterials - Ruhr-Universität Bochum

The "Center of Nanostructures and Nanomaterials" (NanoCenter) was established at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2002 as a platform to encourage interdisciplinary work involving inorganic materials with characteristic dimensions in the sub-micrometer range.

CNI - Center of Nanoelectronic Systems for Information Technology - Forschungszentrum Jülich

On the eve of the transition from microelectronics to nanoelectronics, the traditional routes of down-scaling along the roadmap will no longer guarantee a long-term success. There is a general agreement, that the present performance enhancement of CMOS (microprozessor) technology by a continuous size reduction will run into serious limitations, probably within the next 15 to 20 years.
Physical, technological, and economical barriers are accumulating along the conventional development path. We are experiencing a change of paradigm. On grounds of an exploratory and fundamental research, we see our mission and objective to provide new - sometimes competing - concepts and solutions on long-term perspective, in interaction with the industry.
The CNI is a center of excellence for nanoelectronics at the Research Center Juelich and provides an excellent basis for future developments of nanoelectronics and IT.
