The Interdisciplinary Research Center for Cooperative Functional Systems
The purpose of the Münster FOKUS-Initiative is to foster interfaculty links and collaboration between the conventionally separated disciplines of Physics, Chemistry and Biology as a platform for the formation of new competitive research structures and networks in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This area making use of advanced physical, chemical and biological analysis techniques, synthetic methods, as well as mathematical modeling and theoretical interpretation of experimental results, appears most appropriate for this initiative which is based on interdisciplinary structures.

The university of Dortmund covers a wide range of research activities by different chairs in the field of micro- and nanostructures. The participating workgroups have affiliated in the research cooperation micro- and nanostructures to coordinate the activities within the university and with external partners: The task of the research association is not only to establish interdiciplinary research activities between the workgroups at the university. It is at least as important to create a platform to external industry partners, regional and supra-regional.
Within the university the goal is to initiate research projects where complementary equipment and know-how lead to synergy-effects between the participating groups. At present, groups form the department of electrical engeneering and information science, mechanical engeneering, chemistry and physics are participating.
